Welcome to Glenfinnan Candles, where each of our luxury Candles tells a story of this unique and captivating area. Let the scents and imagery transport you to the tranquility of this atmospheric place.
I’m very excited to share my journey with you.

Glenfinnan and the local area has an inexplicable allure that captivates the soul and etches itself into your heart. The dramatic yet peaceful landscapes. The rugged and beautiful mountains. The serene and enchanting waters of Loch Shiel. The meandering River Finnan that winds its way down tranquil Glen Finnan. The pure white sandy beaches with turquoise crystal clear waters just a few miles further West. It is this stirring beauty which has been my inspiration for the fragrances and imagery of Glenfinnan candles.

Glenfinnan’s history is as captivating as its natural surroundings. It was here, in 1745, that Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie ) gathered the clans and raised his standard, marking the beginning of the Jacobite Rising. The iconic Glenfinnan Monument stands proudly at the head of Loch Shiel in memory of this historic event and is featured in the artwork for our Loch Shiel Candle.
In addition to its historical significance, Glenfinnan is also renowned for the stunning Glenfinnan Viaduct, a remarkable feat of engineering completed in 1901. This 21-arch railway viaduct gracefully spans the Glen, adding a touch of grandeur to the already breathtaking scenery. Trains traverse this viaduct daily, providing passengers with a mesmerising journey along the famous West Highland Line. This iconic bridge features on our Steam Train Candle.

In recent years, Glenfinnan has drawn a different kind of traveller – Harry Potter enthusiasts. The viaduct featured prominently in the Harry Potter films (as well as many others) and became the iconic route of the Hogwarts Express. Visitors from around the globe now flock here in their thousands to witness the magical allure of the Jacobite Express cross the viaduct.

Our story

I was born and raised in the fishing Village of Mallaig on Scotland’s stunning West Coast. It was there that I developed a deep love for the area and the sense of community that defines life in the rural Highlands. Visitors and locals alike were at the heart of our family-run hotel and similarly they too will be at the heart of this small, family-run business, Glenfinnan Candles. Working with my parents in our hotel for many years gave me a great insight into the hospitality and tourism industry. It enabled me to develop a range of business-related skills which I have now found to be of great value as I embark on my candle-making venture.

I’ve always been a creative soul, and Glenfinnan, with its wild beauty, is where my inspiration and creativity has been flowing.
Following a chance conversation, an opportunity presented itself and I was delighted to take over Glenfinnan Candles from Fiona, the previous owner. Fiona proceeded to patiently pass on her candle-making knowledge and skills and so, the process began! As an advocate of candles, this exciting new challenge was exactly the direction I was looking to take in my career. The original Glenfinnan Candles company was founded in the 1970s by Jim & Mary Hunter and at that time they first introduced the Glenfinnan Citronella Candles, which, 50 years later, I am proud to continue producing.
Living in a small rural community can be challenging, especially when it comes to sourcing work which doesn’t require travelling a great distance. I saw a career opportunity to create something of high quality for fellow candle lovers that looks as beautiful as it smells. Also, a unique and special memento that visitors to the area could take home.

The Candles
I’ve wholeheartedly embraced this new venture! The process of making candles is very mindful and relaxing. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed following courses and taking advice from an expert in the candle-making field to ensure a high-quality product. It was important to me that I use the best possible practices; that I sought out the highest quality fragrance oils; the most sustainable and pure soy wax and the most efficient, natural wicks which ensure perfect burn and scent throw.
As well as a luxury, high quality candle, my vision was to complement this sensory journey with beautiful abstract art work on the labelling – images that would bring each aspect of Glenfinnan to life. I was extremely fortunate to chance across some stunning expressive art by another former Mallaig girl, Mhairi Longmuir @ Nooc Art (personal artworks)/ Peacock Creative Design (commercial design). Mhairi understood my vision from our very first meeting and had the digital and artistic skills to produce exactly what I was looking for.
As you relax and unwind with our luxury candles, I hope our scents and imagery help transport you to this peaceful corner of the world
With the unwavering support of David, Findlay & Fraser, Glenfinnan Candles is very much becoming a family business & I’m excited to learn what the future holds for us.
Thank you for being part of my story.
